AL CAPONE, aka “SCARFACE”
ALPHONSE “AL” CAPONE, boss of the Chicago Outfit from 1925 to 1931, was made boss at just age 26. When power from rampant graft, bribery, and intimidation made it difficult to bring the ruthless gangster to justice for violent offenses or bootlegging, the federal government got creative and famously brought him down for more mundane crimes.
Shown here from his 1931 arrest on 22 counts of tax evasion at age 32, Capone was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison, but was paroled early due to failing health. Plagued by numerous serious health conditions the rest of his days, Capone died of heart failure in 1947 at the age of 48.
