ALTA WEISS was the first female minor league baseball player, debuting in 1907. A right-handed pitcher, Weiss was a sensation for two-plus seasons, drawing record crowds wherever her team played. Known as the “Girl Wonder,” she was a fierce competitor and a strikeout artist, more than holding her own against her all-male competition.

Encouraged by her father, Weiss started pitching at a very young age. When her high school refused to allow a girl to take the mound, her father started a school just so she could play on the team. In 1910, Weiss retired at the peak of her popularity to attend med school. She graduated as the only woman in her class and became a successful physician. Her uniform is on display in the Hall of Fame.
