JOHANNES “HONUS” WAGNER was the greatest position player and biggest star of his era in the early 20th century. Still considered by many to be the greatest shortstop of all time, Wagner’s elite hitting and fielding for the Pittsburgh Pirates towered over his peers, earning him the honor of being one of the first five members of the Hall of Fame.
Wagner is perhaps best known for appearing on the “Holy Grail” of baseball cards. In his day, cards were produced and sold by tobacco companies, but in 1909, Wagner decided that he didn’t want his wholesome image associated with cigarettes. Halting production early in the series led to only a handful of Honus Wagner cards being produced for the set, making the card incredibly rare. In 2022, one such card sold for $7.25 million.
