JOSEPH BONANNO, aka “JOE BANANAS”
JOSEPH BONANNO served as boss of New York’s Bonanno crime family from 1931 to 1968. He took control of the family at just 26 years old, becoming one of the youngest major New York crime bosses ever.
This mugshot is from a 1964 arrest at age 59 for falsifying immigration documents after fleeing to Canada to hide out following a botched plot to usurp power by slaying rival bosses. After suffering a heart attack in 1968, Bonanno left the mob and retired to Arizona. He died peacefully in 2002 at the age of 97.
